Mezcal
Mezcal is a distilled spirit made from the core of the agave plant (known as piña), primarily made in Oaxaca-Mexico. It has a strong, smoky, but pure taste, since it's 100% agave blend.
Difference between Tequila and Mezcal
The main difference between tequila and mezcal is that tequila is made specifically from the blue agave plant and mezcal is made from any type of agave. That's why tequila is basically a type of mezcal, that's all.
Types of Mezcal
Mezcal is distilled and then aged just like tequila. So there are basically three types:
Mezcal Añejo
Aged in barrels no longer than 350 liters, at least for a year.
Mezcal Reposado
Aged for two months up to one year.
Mezcal Blanco or Joven
Clear, colorless, aged for up to two months only.
The Worm in Mezcal
It's a characteristic of Mezcal bottles to contain a worm inside, yes! a worm, which may be white or red, this edible worm (when alive) lives in the agave plant, it's stored during harvesting of the plant and added to the bottle during the end of the manufacturing process.
The Scorpion in Mezcal
As if a worm would not be exotic enough, there are also mezcals with scorpions dropped in the bottle.
