Swedish Punsch
Description:
Punsch is a traditional Nordic liqueur produced in Sweden from neutral spirits, sugar, water, and a variety of spices and aromatic flavorings.
Arrack is the most popular base-spirit for the elaboration of this liqueur.
It has a characteristic colour which may vary from golden yellow to dark yellow. Because of its exotic ingredients, it has a unique flavour with overtones of almond, banana, chocolate, whisky and tobacco.
Swedish Punsch differs from Punch, however both names have their root in the Hindi loanword for five, referring to the traditional number of ingredients used in the preparation of the beverage.
History:
Its history starts with the first imported Arrack into Sweden, circa 1730, by the Swedish East India Company. The hard liquor became very popular prepared with the other ingredients, resulting into the Punsch we known and has been the source of inspiration of poets and composers, who included its qualities and effects in Swedish traditional songs during the 18th century. Songs that are still sung specially during the collective festivities until now.
How is it served?
Punsch is served chilled, or warm depending the occasion and time of the year.
