Pastis

Description

Pastis is an anise-flavored liqueur that contains the additional flavor of licorice root, and is bottled with sugar. It's often associated with Absinthe, however both are very different from each other. Pastis does not contain wormwood, and its anise flavor is obtained from a distillation of star anise, and licorice root.

History

The origin of Pastis is a uncertain, however it was first commercialized by Paul Ricard in 1932. It's been since then a very popular liqueur in France, especially in the southern regions of the country.

Uses

Pastis is served diluted with water before drinking, in a proportion of 5 parts water with 1 part Pastis. Pastis is also served straight together with a jug of water for the drinker to blend according to preference. This mixture causes some of the constituents in Pastis to become insoluble, and the appearance of the liqueur changes in color from transparent yellow to milky soft yellow.

Pastis is also enjoyed cold as a refreshment for summer days, with or without ice, or with spring water.
