Chartreuse
Description
Chartreuse is a liqueur composed of distilled alcohol and a secret recipe of 130 herbal extracts aged in oak barrels. It has a very strong characteristic taste, very sweet, but becomes both spicy and pungent.
History
Chartreuse was originally made by the Carthusian Monks, and it's been popular since the 1740's. The liqueur was named after the Monk's Grande Chartreuse monastery, located in the Chartreuse Mountains, Grenoble in France. This liqueur is produced in a factory in the town of Voiron.
Types
GREEN CHARTREUSE is the only liquor in the world that has a completely natural green color due to the addition of chlorophyll. It contains 55% alcohol and it is drunk very cold, on the rocks, after dinner as a long drink.
YELLOW CHARTREUSE is milder and sweeter than Green Chartreuse. It was introduced to the world in 1838. It is made with the addition of honey and its pale yellow color is obtained with saffron. It contains lower alcohol (40%) than its partner.
